Chapter 4 -9 : The Dark-haired Aide is Reaching Out His Hand
At the end of the magnificent hallway lined with bronze statues, that figure was glowing from the thin light seeping through the outside.
His jet black hair, his dreadfully beautiful features, and his proportional tall figure.
Also, those cold violet eyes that penetrated through Alicia.
“Clovis Cromwell…”
A hoarse voice barely escaped from her dry throat. All the while, her body was trembling, she felt her blood being drained out.
“No...”
Alicia was paralyzed in fear, as the Black Grim Reaper took a step forward.
“No, no…”
His almond eyes were riveted coldly to Alicia, flared up with disdain and contempt.
“No, no, no, no…”
Holding a blunt glistening sword, he raised his hand to prosecute Alicia’s sin.
“NOOOOO!!!”
“Your Highness?!”
“Your Highness! Please get ahold of yourself!!!”
Alicia, who went half-mad and screamed frantically, noticed that she was being held down by both of her trusted maids and the Royal Lady-in-waiting.
“Annie… Martha…? Lady Fourier…?”
When she called them out with a quivering voice, the three looked at each other in concern and slight bewilderment. Tears ran down Alicia's face, as she assessed the situation with a clear mind. Her bag which was filled with snacks had already fallen to the ground before anyone noticed.
Before her hazy sight, Alicia found the one she was seeking.
“Clovis….”
The young Aide was watching with a stiff expression, away from the three who were huddling around Alicia. There were no traces of daydream left on the frightened Princess, however, Alicia pitifully stood still as if she was frozen in place.
“No, Clovis didn’t do anything wrong. I am the one at fault…”
"Please calm down, Your Highness. Calm down."
“It’s the truth... Lady Fourier. He did nothing wrong.”
Lady Fourier patted on Alicia’s delicate back, as Alicia held onto her desperately. Drops of tears were spilling out from Alicia's blue eyes.
"Please… tell Clovis. I am sorry that I scared him."
Once again murmuring that she was sorry, Alicia turned limp and lost her consciousness.
...
Princess Alicia was immediately carried to her bed-chamber by the maids. Concurrently, the summoned Court Physician rushed in, causing her chamber to be merry from the maids and physicians who were bustling in and out.
Clovis was leaning against the wall, away from the others, as if he didn't wish to be in their way.
It had been a while since Alicia was carried inside. During that time, Clovis wasn't able to tell what was going on in her chamber, thus now, he had no idea about his Master's condition.
"I am sorry that I scared him."
The young lady's voice who earnestly tried to look after Clovis despite looking emaciated and pallid resounded in his head, as the young Aide grasped onto his locks of black hair.
The maids and the Royal Lady-in-waiting were there to watch the whole scene, and Alicia herself had said it. No one was blaming Clovis or doubted he was responsible.
Therefore, there was no reason for Clovis' presence there. However, when the image of Alicia's feeble body being carried came into his mind, Clovis couldn't bring himself to return to his room.
"Oh? You are still here?"
Clovis raised his head towards the abrupt voice coming on top of his head and widened his almond-shaped eyes.
“Your Highness….!”
"It's fine, you don't need to"
King James placidly prevented Clovis who was flustered to correct his stance. When Clovis took a look, the maids and Physicians were swarming out from the Princess’ chamber.
“I heard about the situation from Henri. You don’t look too good either.”
“I’m fine…. rather than that, how is Her Highness Alicia?”
“She’s sleeping soundly right now. But rather, the Court Physician has given up. The attending physician said that she is fine and couldn’t find anything wrong with her. We could only think that Cia is mentally tormented by something we have no clue of.”
“Is… that so...?”
Responding to the King, Clovis dropped his gaze in a shrouded expression.
The figure of Alicia who was quivering in the Hall of Time was by no means ordinary. His chest felt tight since there was no mistake that Alicia was terrified of him.
King James smiled gently towards the aide who had a grim expression.
“The sun is down now. You need to rest for today. Even if you stay here, there’s nothing you can do.”
“I can’t do that.”
As he responded with a firm refusal, Clovis lowered his head to the King.
“Pardon me for being rude, but please allow me to remain here for tonight. Even if there's nothing I can do, I will be here to protect Her Highness. I won’t let Her Highness suffer more than this.”
Hanging his head, he admitted his incompetence in this situation. Looking at this Aide, King James put on a wry smile on his round face.
“I’m going to have a nightmare just by imagining there’s a young man with a pallid face standing outside the door all night long.”
“Uhh…”
Clovis got stuck in his words with that playful yet accurate remark. Still, King James shrugged his shoulder and stopped Annie on her track, who just came out from the Princess’ chamber.
“I have one favor. This man is stubborn and won’t move a finger from here. He will keep resisting even if he is about to collapse, so I want you to prepare a seat beside Cia’s bed”
“Pardon….?!”
“Your Majesty! That’s…”
Annie, who unconsciously spoke out what was on her mind, turned to look at Clovis. However, Clovis was just as flustered as she was.
“I don’t mind waiting here. Waiting inside the Princess’ chamber is a bit…”
“If you stand here all night, I will scold Cia for it. I know that you are very loyal to Cia. That alone is enough to put trust in you.”
King James took his leave after patting Clovis’ shoulder, who was still taken aback. And then, Annie clapped her hand.
“How long are you gonna stay like that? His Majesty the King said he has entrusted the Princess to you. There’s a seat that's usually used by the tutors, so please hurry up and go inside.”
“No, I…”
Annie glared at Clovis, who was still reluctant.
“Her Highness didn’t tell us a thing”
Clovis stared back at Annie.
“The Princess has something bothering her mind. And we are not aware of it. Therefore, I don’t have any choice but to feign ignorance since Her Highness wishes for it, right?”
However, he was different. Feeling remorseful, the maid continued ahead.
“I don’t know what started it, but only when Her Highness is with you that she opens her heart. I envy you for that…”
“Do you also feel distressed by Her Highness’ suffering?”
“Yes…”
Annie flatly nodded over Clovis’ relentless question.
“It’s much easier to embrace someone who is in front of you than to find and embrace someone who is suffering somewhere unseen.”
Clovis, who understood what Annie meant, felt like his chest about to burst.
When Clovis thought that the kind-hearted Princess had suffered in a place that he couldn’t see, his heart turned chaotic. If by chance he could carry her suffering, it would be much better if she suffered in a place that he could reach.
Annie pointed to the end of the hallway after she let out what she wanted to say.
“The small room at the end of the hallway is mine and Martha’s room. Please call me if something happens to the Princess. Then, please excuse me”
Slightly lowered her head, the maid was disappearing into the dark hallway.
Clovis, who was left behind, took a short breath before putting his hand on the door of the room where Alicia slept.
Ohhhh my dear alicia T_T its too sad seeing you suffer alone....
