Chapter 5 - 1 : Quality of a Ruler and the Princess' Resolution
Clovis was currently waiting.
With his charming, jet black hair done in a casual style and a dark, brown long coat for outings, he certainly looked like a nobleman who simply left the city to enjoy his day off.
The door in front of Clovis opened, toning down the boisterous screams from the females of the palace. Annie, who came out from inside winked playfully towards Clovis.
"Sorry to make you wait, Young Master. Young Miss is ready."
As Annie gave way, a small figure appeared from behind her.
"How is it? Do I look strange?"
Alicia wore a charcoal gray hooded poncho, with a humble yet lovely moss green dress peeking out underneath. Clovis smiled sweetly towards the restless Princess, who looked unaccustomed to her attire.
"Of course it looks good on you, Alice."
A little while ago...
Clovis was involved in the revolution.
And he was the one who killed Alicia.
After Alicia talked about everything except for those two facts, the dark-haired Aide opened his mouth now that the Princess had calmed down.
“Now that we are going to change the future, the most important issue at the moment is how to prevent war with Ealdar. But, information from Your Highness previous life alone is not enough…”
Alicia had her eyes widened. Even without knowing anything, Clovis seemed to genuinely think about changing the future. Clovis nodded with a serious look after showing his careful thoughts.
"Let's analyze the situation with the neighboring nations. Fortunately, diplomacy is one of the fields that the Chancery is taking care of. In addition, I have my personal experience from being sent as a delegation.”
Alicia was getting more amazed that she undertook such a reliable Aide, for she came to discover the neighboring nations’s internal affairs in mere days.
"First is Ealdar, but they won't start a war within the next five years."
"How can you be that sure?”
Alicia blinked in surprise, doubting her excellent Aide. It was already the time of their evening meeting. Annie and Martha were usually around, but today Alicia had ordered everyone to leave, thus the two were the only ones in the room.
“There are several reasons, but the biggest one is the domestic reform Empress Elizabeth is working on.”
As Alicia waited for the next words with a tense look, a gulp arised from her throat. Her father had also mentioned it, “Beth is enthusiastic about restructuring the domestic order.”
“That’s one of the reasons why we were dispatched as delegations… At this moment, Empress Elizabeth is preoccupied with implementing centralization.”
“Uhh…”
Alicia unconsciously had her mouth agape. Clovis had also seemed to expect Alicia to be befuddled, hence, he took out a large piece of paper.
“Please take a look. This is the current political system of our Kingdom.”
Looking at the paper filled with names of regions, Alicia unconsciously frowned.
As expected, Alicia hadn’t yet learned about the political system or anything about governing.
Clovis couldn’t help to let out a smile towards his perplexed Master.
“Your Highness doesn’t need to comprehend everything. To put it simply… here,” He explained while tracing around a "Fiefdom" with his finger.
“In our Kingdom, except for territories under the direct control of the monarch, we grant land to old aristocratic households whose peerage is Marquess or higher and leave the land management to them. Is Your Highness with me this far?”
"Somehow." Alicia nodded with a serious look.
"On the other hand, the reform that Empress Elizabeth pursued is a complete abolition of lordships. For instance, let’s say that someone will be placed to direct this fiefdom in place of the feudal lord. Naturally, the lord will lose their independence and completely fall under capital control.”
“I don’t really know anything about such complicated matters, but won’t the lord be angry if they do that?”
If Heilland was to implement similar reform, the Privy Council wouldn’t stay silent since members of the Privy Council were all influential aristocrats who had been granted major territories. Either it was from the revolution or something else, the Kingdom would still fall into ruin.
However, Clovis shook his head lightly.
“There isn’t anyone who dares to talk back, even more look at her in the eyes towards the Empress. Besides, Ealdar is the type of Empire with a strong center, to begin with. Unlike Heilland, they may have many nations bordering their territory, the centralization began early. He shifted his violet eyes to Alicia as he explained. “If the reform is successful, Ealdar’s national strength would be doubled. With the spread of the new order, the common folks will be on the rise and it is extremely advantageous for the reform.” There was no reason to include a boorish war on such an opportunity. That was why they wouldn’t wage a war for at least five years to come. Alicia could only be amazed at her beautiful Aide who had finished his explanation.
