Chapter 1
“As usual, Liselotte, you look as beautiful as a flower.”
“Oh! Thank you, Alberto.”
Watching Alberto and his girlfriend, Miss Liselotte, walking around gleefully in each other’s embrace made me feel nauseated. Even if they were in love, how could they stand to do such embarrassing things? Could love shield you from the phenomenon of embarrassment? It really was a mystery beyond myself.
The couple looked so good together that they were made the starlets of high society. But even if there was no discourse between them, their happy ending could not be guaranteed. Amongst nobles, it was simply a fact that one could not marry for love alone.
Due to the issues of position, succession, expectations, amongst a myriad of other things, their parents couldn’t agree on an arrangement between the two of them; no matter how strong their feelings were for each other.
Fast forward to today, and the perfect couple were no more; the two ripped apart by their families and made to wed another. And thus, I came into the picture. Claudia; Alberto’s newly appointed fiancée.
This is surely going to become a great big mess. I couldn’t help but think that as I met Alberto for the first time.
“Greetings. Thank you for your time toda-”
“I love Liselotte.”
I couldn’t even finish a sentence before being interrupted midway.
Could it be that this guy was incapable of properly greeting someone? Was his mind so consumed by thoughts of his beloved Liselotte that he could no longer think anymore? If it was like that, then he must have been even more simple-minded than I thought.
“Let me finish my greetings, please. We can discuss further after that.”
My cold and serious tone seemed to have knocked a little bit of sense into him.
He apologized; at last understanding that what he did was undeniably rude.
With straight, ash brown hair that would sway with the wind, slightly slanted obsidian eyes that looked like they could suck you in, facial features that seemed to be like sculpted art, and a well-trained body, he was someone that could easily entrance all the women in the world.
But it did not matter how beautiful someone was if their insides could not reflect the same.
“I’m sorry. I interrupted you midway. I ended up doing something really disrespectful.”
“If you understand what you did, then I don’t mind.”
Thankfully, he had the common sense to acknowledge his wrong. Although I had told him not to mind it anymore, he still showcased a troubled expression.
And with that, I felt a little bit secure with our pairing.
Unfortunately, the atmosphere in this room was dreadfully stiffening. It felt more like a funeral than a marriage meeting.
“Claudia, there is something I need to tell you.”
He maintained his troubled expression as he looked at me.
“There is only one woman I will dedicate the rest of my life to. I must apologize to you, but you should know that this engagement is not something I wish for, nor am I planning on marrying you.”
“So do you wish for me to talk to our parents in order to break this engagement?”
A smile was on my face as I said those words. Albert looked a little startled at that. In my view, if he was really asking a girl to do that, there was the likelihood of him having unpardonably low pride. If you want something, then you should use your own strength to get it.
“No, I’m not asking for you to do that.”
Because of his unexpected reply, I felt an inkling of interest begin in my chest.
A part of me was now tempted to tease and embarrass him.
“But it is like that right? You came all the way to my house, and without a single thought of consideration for my feelings or my opinions, you declared your love for another woman. You affirmed that you don’t have any intention to marry me and thus would make me lose any will I had to marry you. If I began to cry and wail about how it would be an injustice for me to wed you, then my parents would pity their poor daughter who was being forced to marry such a man. They would ask your parents to break off our engagement for my sake. And when that happens, you would take the opportunity to persuade your parents that marrying Liselotte would be a good idea because she accepts you as you are.”
Am I wrong? I sent him my purest smile. He shivered and pulled his body away from me.
After that long-winded monologue, I was eager to see how the other party would respond. To my disappointment, Alberto simply became quiet and refused to move an inch.
How boring.
Now, I just wanted him to go home.
“As much as I would like to make your wishes come true, the unfortunate fact of the matter is that my father is not so soft of a parent for him to change his mind at the sight of his daughter shedding some tears. As for myself, I am not the kind of woman who throws a tantrum if I don’t have my way. If you want something done, then use your own strength and work hard by yourself.”
“Are you okay with all of this?”
I understood the bigger question behind his words.
‘Would you be happy, marrying a man you never wished for?’
What a naive boy.
“This world is not only filled with cute women who believe that marriage is like a bed of roses, you know?”
“All of the women I know are like that.”
I laughed at that. “Well that’s obviously only around you, right?”
Alberto finally had enough of my attitude; abruptly standing and announcing that he was returning to his estate
“I hope that the next time you come here, it would be because you needed to inform me that our engagement had been broken.”
My gentle farewell caused him to send me an intense glare. He slammed the door of the tea room closed. Oh dear.
Well, this marriage was the arrangement my parents had decided upon. There was nothing that could be done to change it, no matter how depressed I was becoming at the prospect of my future.
