Chapter 4 - 3: The Dark-haired Aide is Reaching Out His Hand

*Back to Alicia's POV*

Princess Alicia's day was extremely hectic.

Alicia learned etiquette, dance, embroidery, history, theology, literature, astronomy, medicine,
common affairs, and many more. Being a Queen wasn't just about ascending the throne.

To maintain her status, she needed to learn a wide range of subjects.

Each subject was taught by a tutor, who showed up one after another whilst wielding a teacher's cane,
according to the schedules which were crammed together without even sparing any minute or second.
For a ten years old girl, her life was extremely constricted.

Until a while ago, Alicia wasn't bothered by the numerous studies since she was the successor of the
throne. After all, the more she learnt about the history, the more she knew that she was more unlikely
acceding to Queen. In that case, it would be more fun to run around the garden and skip those tedious
studies.

However, after regaining the memory of “The night of Revolution”, Alicia took studying seriously
just like a whole different person. The history teacher's mouth was agape in surprise, and the literature
teacher was smothered in tears of joy in regard to that change.

Still, human beings were not able to change that easily. Since she had been neglectful about her
studies up until now, once she listened to the lessons earnestly, she still couldn't make sense of it
because she didn't have any prior knowledge.

"I don't want to use my head anymore…"

"You've worked hard today, Your Highness. I will prepare tea with sugar for you in a second."

Annie, the maid who came in bringing a tea set, watched the small princess, who plopped on top
of the desk as soon as the classes for the day had ended, with a sympathetic look.

"Your highness, aren't you going to skip your lessons just like usual?"

The maid took a glance at Alicia while pouring tea into the teacup. Smelling the fragrant scent of tea,
Alicia cocked her head.

"Is it that strange for me to study seriously?"

"Well, until a while ago, Your Highness always ran away from taking lessons and I used to
accompany Your Highness to play tag within the castle. Though it was fun…"

Annie, who was too honest for her own good, unhesitatingly said while letting out a hearty smile.
For Alicia who had no siblings, Annie was a dependable older sister figure. Knowing that, she
might also regard Alicia more than just her Master.

"I am just worried that Your Highness might fall sick while trying too hard being a good obedient
young lady all of sudden. Your Highness didn't take any break even until late night... Is there anything
that bothers Your Highness's mind?"

Alicia froze from Annie's keen words.

After being in contact with the star envoy, Alicia had imposed herself to study, something she
wasn't good at for the sake of "changing the future". It was because she needed as much information
as possible to change the situation to the better, even if it was just a little.

She was lucky that she happened to find Clovis and placed him close to her. But from here on,
it wouldn't go as well as she wanted it to be.

If she tried to entangle "The night of Revolution", the biggest problem that lied ahead was the war
with the neighboring Empire, Ealdar. It would bring King James to his death and cause the fall of the
Kingdom to its neighbor's ruling, inciting the revolutionary night.

While she would surely try to change the future, she couldn't possibly prevent her beloved father's death.
In order to do that, it was crucial to avoid the predestined war with Ealdar. That was why Alicia devoted
herself to studying even though she wasn't the best at it.

Of course, such a firm oath was not something to tell anybody. Even to someone as dear as Annie who
was like her own sister.

"I just, somehow think that I need to be dependable..."

Annie didn't pry further over Alicia's vague answer. Perhaps she had noticed, but she swallowed down
her doubt and quietly arranged tea and sweets in front of Alicia.

The scent of the sugary tea gently tickled her nose. Alicia felt like crying just from looking at the tea
which was brewed just to her preference. It felt like Annie's concern was also being poured into the tea.
Annie quietly stood close to Alicia, without even knowing the circumstances of the Princess.

"Th-thank you for the tea."

"My pleasure, please enjoy."

Alicia rubbed her eyes, and was about to drink her tea when someone knocked on the door.

"Your Highness seemed a little weary, should I tell my report tomorrow?"

"Don't worry, I am fine. Rather, tell me how it was today."

Alicia flipped her blue hair and smiled at Clovis, who was sitting across from her.

Through Chancellor Otto's idea, Clovis was to visit Alicia in the evening after he was done with his
duty, and make a report about his day. It was a personal agreement between them.

Generally, a master and the aide would eventually meet each other even without such an agreement.

However, it wasn't the case for Alicia who only participated in few public affairs. That being said,
communication was essential to enhance their mutual trust. Thus, such agreement was being made.

Alicia originally felt uneasy to let this young man who just almost turned ten, to walk all the way to
visit her without any important matter at hand. That was why she refused the idea as she thought the
person himself would also think that it was only a bother. However, Clovis surprisingly didn't concede.

He didn't seem to be reluctant either, rather he was (while keeping his calm demeanor) strangely
excited about coming over. That was why Alicia eventually agreed to it. Looking at that, it was no
wonder that occasionally Alicia saw this handsome aide of hers as a huge dog with black fur.

Annie had also prepared a cup of tea in front of Clovis. Different from Alicia's, his tea used less sugar.
Clovis took a sip of tea and responded to Alicia's prodding, as he slowly lifted his head.

"Today, I did a test from Sir Nizel."

"Test? What kind of test?"

1Alicia made an "o" shaped mouth as she was reminded of the bundle of parchment that her tutor
brought. However, what Clovis just explained briefly was somewhat different from what Alicia
expected.

"So, you didn't have any other data on your hand, but you identified the fault within a
report only with knowledge from your head?"

"It wasn't such a big deal. The report just coincided to some documents that I happened to
skim through before"

The young aide spoke as if it was nothing, but almost no one would be able to have the
same analysis as him even if they were given the same exact data and time. Rather than to squeeze a
vast amount of knowledge inside, the ability to draw it out when appropriate was as important.

"Oh, I wish I had half of Clovis' brain, it would be nice to be so sharp"

"Princess Alicia?"

Clovis' violet eyes blinked over at Alicia, who plopped on top of her desk. However, he quickly
noticed those thick books which piled up on top of his relatively young Master's desk and seemed
to come into conclusion.

Author's note: I feel bad to cut it here, but here comes nothing.1Originally she made a "he" (へ) character with her mouth.
